Chinese Zodiac Signs & Meanings

Chinese Zodiac Signs & Meanings

The Chinese zodiac is also known as the ‘Sheng Xiao’ is primarily divided into 12 different categories where an animal represents each category. Each animal in this particular zodiac represents one year, and this sequence continues for 12 years before the cycle is repeated once again.

Legendary sources state that this Chinese zodiac came into existence when Gautama Buddha was about to renounce the mortal world. It is said that before his departure, he invited all the animals for the event.

However, only 12 of them showed up at the venue. He thus honored them for being present at the occasion by having a celestial progression named under each animal and thus the term ‘Year of the Animal’ came into existence.

Another story that follows the creation of the Chinese zodiac of animals is that when Jade, the king of heavens, invited the animals to his court for gaining better insight into the various happenings on earth, only 12 of the animals showed up.

The order in which they arrived at the king’s court is descriptive of the order in which these signs follow one after another in the Chinese zodiac.

The 12 animals of the Chinese Zodiac in order are Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog, Pig.
